Before 2007, there was no county - wide bereavement support service in Dorset, available to children and their families who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, other family member or friend. A feasibility study commissioned by the Macmillan Cancer Trust, Christchurch and carried out for Mosaic by Dr Sue Eccles from Bournemouth University showed that up to 6200 children in Dorset could be affected by the death of a parent, sibling, close relative or friend each year.

A core management team of specialist clinicians, medical practitioners and child support workers who realised there was a gap in the provision of bereavement counselling worked together to bring Mosaic to its launch in 2007.

Prior to the formation of Mosaic, existing support for these families was extremely limited. Whilst local hospice care recognises the need for family support pre and post death, these services do not usually extend to causes of death other than cancer related illness. Mosaic offers appropriate interventions regardless of the cause of death, and children referred to our service are bereaved due reasons such as suicide, road traffic accident, heart disease, as well as long term illnesses including cancer.
