Encourage parents to
- Be honest with their children and talk to them using words they understand
- Avoid using euphemisms e.g. "we have lost daddy" can be confusing for very young children
- Remember that children need information a little at a time
- Encourage children and young people to ask questions
- Answer the questions simply and honestly
- Involve children and young people in decisions e.g. funeral arrangements
- Not be afraid to ask for help
- Talk to the school
